Seven Chicago establishments, many of which are in the Boystown enclave of Lakeview, have made it to Out magazine’s list of 200 of the Greatest Bars in the World. One from downstate Peoria and a favorite of mine from my hometown of Honolulu also took the honor.
The publication’s editors admitted that choosing which places get to be on the list is not a definitive science.
“We’ve taken nominations, suggestions, polled friends and experts around the world, and even done a bit of on-the-ground research,” the editors write. “We’ve also tried to arrive at a list that satisfies everyone from a pierced and leather-clad cub to a skinny, go-go boy wannabe. But we’re sure that this will only stoke the fires of debate.”
There are 112 gay bars featured from the United States and its territories. In Illinois are: Buddies on Adams in Peoria; Cell Block, Roscoe’s, Minibar, Spin, and Sidetrack in Boystown; Big Chicks, Hamburger Mary’s in Edgewater and Andersonville.
My all-time favorite gay bar is of course in my native Hawaii—Hula’s Bar and Lei Stand near Waikiki Beach. I recently spent almost everyday there on my last trip to the islands this past April. The bar was literally my office with MacBook and Jack and Diets.
Hula’s has some of the friendliest, most fun bartenders ever, and has the best catamaran cruise deal along the beach shores, too!Read More
